McClary Hill History We've named our farm after the hill on which it lies. The hill, in turn, gets the name from the first European couple to settle our town of Epsom, the Scotch-Irish pair, Andrew and Agnes McClary. The house they built in 1741 still stands, on land adjoining our own. The house we live in was probably built by Margaret McClary, their oldest daughter, and her husband, Samuel George Wallis, a deacon and a doctor. The old deeds and papers relating to this house were lost in a fire long ago, so it's impossible to know the date of its creation. Some evidence points to the mid-1770s, but there's simply no way to know for sure. We can say, with certainty, however, that the house is pretty old. The links below will bring you to a wonderful set of articles about the McClary family. One of the McClary sons, Andrew, Jr., became a major in the Revolutionary War and eventually fell at Bunker Hill. Fort McClary in Kittery, Maine, was named after him. Several heroic tales have been written about this grand fellow, an apparently larger-than-life character, and we'd love to know how many are true. http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~epsom/history/McClary%20Family%20History.pdf http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~epsom/history/McClary%20Home.pdf |
